How to Store Handmade Soaps in Humid Weather

Handmade cold process soaps are rich in natural glycerin, a humectant that draws moisture from the air. While this makes them wonderfully moisturizing for your skin, it also means they’re a bit more sensitive to weather, especially humidity.

During sticky, damp seasons, you might notice your soap "sweating" or becoming softer than usual. This is completely normal, but with a few smart storage habits, you can keep your bars firm, fragrant, and fresh for longer.

1. Store in a Cool, Dry Place

Keep unused soaps away from steamy bathrooms, windowsills, or any area prone to dampness. A cupboard or drawer in a well-ventilated room works best.

2. Avoid Airtight Plastic

Storing soap in plastic containers or zip-lock bags may seem like a good idea, but it actually traps humidity and prevents the soap from breathing. Instead, use thin plastic wrap or paper or cloth pouches and store them in a plastic carton or storage box away from moisture.

3. Let the Air Flow

Whether you’re curing, storing, or displaying your soaps, air circulation is key. A wooden tray, open basket, or slatted shelf allows air to pass through, helping the soap remain dry and firm during cure and a simple plastic storage box (not airtight) after it is cured.

4. Use a Well-Draining Soap Dish

Once in use, always store your soap on a dish that drains water away. Avoid letting it sit in a puddle, this causes handmade soaps to soften quickly. A dish with ridges or holes helps the bar dry between uses.

5. Embrace the Natural Look

If your soap does develop glycerin dew (those little beads of moisture on the surface), simply wipe it off with a dry cloth. It’s a sign that your soap is rich in natural ingredients, not a sign of spoilage.

6. Rotate and Use Your Soaps

Handmade soaps are best used within a year or two of purchase for maximum scent and freshness. Rotate your collection so older bars get used first, and enjoy the little luxuries you’ve stocked up on!

With a little extra care, your handmade soaps will stay just as beautiful and beneficial as the day they were made, no matter the weather.
